This collection of projects attempts to deepen our understanding of urban informality in a historical context, both of slums and informal livelihood activities, and present strategies that can improve conditions for slumdwellers and informal sector workers by working within existing urban institutional structures.
Urban informality usually refers to one of two things, either the informal use of space for livelihood activities like unregistered manufacturing units and street vending, or informal housing settlements, commonly known as slums. The two often overlap in space and people involved. In either case, urban planning practices in India have failed to take into account the pervasive reality of urban informality. This collection of projects attempts to deepen our understanding of urban informality in a historical context, both of slums and informal livelihood activities, and present strategies that can improve conditions for slumdwellers and informal sector workers by working within existing urban institutional structures.
